DhekiakhowaBornamghar: The Sacred Lamp That Has Been Burning for Centuries
In the
heart of Assam's Jorhat district lies a namghar, a place of congregational
worship for the Ekasarana religion, known as Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar. This
namghar has a rich history dating back to 1461 when it was established by the
revered saint and reformer Madhavdeva. But what makes it truly unique is the
earthen lamp that was kindled by Madhavdeva himself, which has been burning
continuously for 484 years!
Legend has
it that Madhavdeva, after a long period of preaching, stopped over at a small
village in Jorhat where he took shelter at an old lady's humble hut. The food
offered by the old lady was simple yet heartfelt, and Madhavdeva decided to
build a namghar in the village in her honor. He named it Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar
after the experience he had at the old lady's place, and he gave her the
responsibility of lighting the earthen lamp at the namghar.
And so, the
lamp has been burning continuously since then, with the priests of the namghar
religiously refueling it as and when required to keep the flame alive. The lamp
has become a symbol of the dedication and devotion of the people of Assam
toward their faith.
The
DhekiakhowaBornamghar is spread over a vast area of 13 bighas, with other
edifices besides the namghar, all maintained through donations given by
devotees. The namghar committee also sponsors various cultural and social
programs throughout the year.
Located
just 15 km east of Jorhat town, DhekiakhowaBornamghar is easily accessible via
state and local buses from National Highway 37. Visitors can also avail of
rental cars from Jorhat Airport to reach the namghar.
The sacred
lamp at this Vaishnavite monastery in Jorhat district which has been burning
continuously for the past many years was also formally recognized by the Asia
Book of Records. The certificate of recognition was handed over to Jorhat Lok
Sabha MP and former Union Minister Bijoy Krishna Handique, who stated that the
recognition would help in furthering the teachings of the two Vaishnavite
saints SrimantaSankardev and Mahapurush Sri SriMadhabdeva, as well as spreading
awareness of the sacred lamp across the world.
DhekiakhowaBornamghar
is not just a namghar but a testament to the unwavering faith and devotion of
the people of Assam towards their religion and their saints. The sacred lamp
burning continuously for centuries is a symbol of the unbroken connection
between the past, present, and future generations of Assam.
