Recently, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Donyi-Polo Airport (Hollongi) at the state capital - Itanagar, marking it as Arunachal Pradesh's first full-fledged Greenfield Airport. This does not mean that it is the state's first and only airport, there are commercial airports in the Tezu, Ziro, and Pasighat towns among the others that share air connectivity with the neighbouring sister, Assam. Nevertheless, Donyi-Polo Airport is the upgraded version of all the airports; connecting Arunachal Pradesh with not only Assam but different parts of the country. Now, one can easily travel to their preferred and most anticipated destinations in the state via railway, roadway or airway.

Although every region in Arunachal Pradesh is worth visiting and exploring, here are a few must-visit winter trips (do not exclusively cover snow-capped regions) picked from a local itself, that you should note in your next travel destination list. Starting with…

Deomali (Tirap district)

A town so quaint, yet underrated; Deomali is a cosy small town rocked by magnificent mountain hills and cuddled by the Burhi-Dihing river. One can witness wild elephants crossing the path now and then, and the town provides several trekking and hiking activities in the region. It is the perfect destination for those who want to just chill and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. The Centre had approved the opening of 2 new Tourist Routes In Arunachal for tourism purposes i.e. Dibrugarh-Deomali-Hukanjuri-Khonsa, making it easier for the visitors to travel in comfort.

Daporijo (Uppers Subansiri district)

The place offers plenty of leisure activities amidst its pristine beauty, from the Hindu pilgrim site; Menga Mandir - a natural cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Laila Majnu site for lovers to adrenaline rush activities near the mighty Subansiri river, one can experience several activities. The weather here in winter is cool enough to feel the season's vibe but not icy cold to wish for summer back. Dapo town itself does not glimpse snowfalls but if you wish to witness some snow and heavenly locations, there are villages such as Taksing, Lemiking, Nacho and more under the Daporijo circle which are even more underrated and unknown yet captivating. Check this traveller's vlog on Daporijo town out https://youtu.be/G9nIbwbaRcw

Walong (Anjaw district)

Another underrated town, Walong is one of the Easternmost towns in India, located at a high elevation along the Himalayan ranges of the Anjaw district. A peaceful long drive or a short break along the road covering pine trees and the Lohit river, or a bath in the natural hot springs will heal all your exhaustion. The wilderness of Walong inhabits rare mammals such as Mishmi takin, Red goral and Leaf muntjac as well as the rare Sclater's Monal bird, the Mishmi Hills Giant Flying Squirrel (Petaurista mishmiensis) etc. A visit to this town will surely leave you with more than the experience you were looking for.

Bhalukpong (West Kameng)

Bhalukpong, a town almost forgotten these days, used to be one of the top travel destinations that even MTV reality show -'Roadies' came to shoot in the region. Although the name Bhalukpong stays at the tip of our tongues when planning a getaway, we forget to pack bags and visit for real. As with every other region in Arunachal, Bhalukpong will captivate you with its diverse and unique flora and fauna, along with access to different entertaining activities such as trekking, angling, rafting etc. One must check out the 10th-century ruins- "Bhalukpong Fort", preserved remains of Bana, grandson of King Bhaluka, Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, and can also visit sites near the area such as Tippi and Sessa Orchid Sanctuary, Tippi and Bomdilla town.

All in all, Arunachal Pradesh is a cost-friendly place with an abundance of natural beauty and adventures. Before wishing to travel to Switzerland or Iceland, do give a visit to 'The Land of Dawn-Lit Mountains' where the first rays of sunlight occur before scattering to the rest of the country. Just remember the best season to visit the state is, Not-In-Monsoon; other than that, the state will give you the best experience all year round.
