Founding and Legacy of Binny Yanga

Binny Yanga, affectionately known as Maya and Mummy, established OWA in 1979 to support underprivileged women and children. Over the years, she became a maternal figure to hundreds of orphans and destitute women. Yanga led the organization with unwavering dedication until her passing in 2015. Despite her absence, her associates maintain that OWA remains robust and efficient under the leadership of Ratan Anya, the current chairperson.

Continuing the Mission

Ratan Anya has upheld Yanga's mission, steering OWA through numerous challenges. She credits Yanga's enduring inspiration for her perseverance. OWA faces threats from relatives of those seeking refuge from domestic violence, but Anya's legal background helps her manage these volatile situations. The proximity of the supportive Naharlagun police station provides additional security.

Homes for the Abused and Abandoned

OWA operates homes for children in need, including an orphanage for those with no place to go. The children, many of whom are survivors of child labor and sexual assault, receive education and vocational training to ensure self-sufficiency. Despite the trauma these children have endured, OWA strives to provide a nurturing environment.

Specialized Adoption Agency

OWA's SishuGreh is a specialized adoption agency registered with the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA). It primarily serves teenage mothers or parents unable to care for their children. While some children are successfully adopted, those with severe mental and physical disabilities often remain under OWA's care due to a lack of willing adoptive parents.

SwadharGreh: A Haven for Women

The SwadharGreh provides shelter for women survivors of domestic violence, polygamy, and child marriages. Women receive counseling, vocational training, and healthcare during their stay, empowering them to achieve economic independence. The success stories of these women, many of whom become skilled artisans, reflect the home's impact.

OJU Craft Center: Economic Empowerment

The OJU Craft Center trains women survivors of violence in various crafts, creating a sustainable source of income for both the women and the association. The center's products are sold in emporiums, with profits supporting OWA's operations.

Jan ShikshaSansthan (JSS): Vocational Training Hub

JSS, an independent society under the OWA platform, provides vocational training to socially and economically disadvantaged women. Since its inception in 2004, JSS has trained over 7,500 women in various trades. The institute continues to expand its curriculum to include new technical subjects and entrepreneurial skills.
