Weightlifters from Arunachal Pradesh bring laurels; national records created
Weightlifters from Arunachal Pradesh have displayed their prowess in the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth, Junior and Senior Championship-2022, which was being held at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The competition will serve as the qualifier for the 5th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, 2022 which is scheduled to be held later this year. It is also to be considered as a Selection Trial for the IWF Youth and Junior World Championships both for eligible lifters. Over 800 weightlifters from across 30 different states actively participated in the national competition. Among these were the energetic weightlifters from Arunachal Pradesh bagging medals for the state, and some creating history by breaking national records.
Creating a national record by lifting a total of 171 kg, the ace-weightlifter from Arunachal Pradesh, Boni Mangkhya bagged two Gold medals for the state - the first Gold medal in 49 Kg Senior Category, and the other one in the 55 Kg Youth (W) category, where she lifted 73 kg in snatch and 98 kg in clean and jerk.KojumTaba also set a new national record with a lift of 153 kgs breaking the previous record of 151 kgs. He also won two Gold medals for the state by lifting a total of 345 kgs while competing in the senior men’s 102 kg category. Markio Tario clinched 1 Gold and 1 Silver medal while participating in the 67 kg weight category. Overall he lifted a total of 286 kg (Snatch: 128 Kg + Clean & Jerk: 158 Kg). Joining in, Sambo Lapung bagged two more gold medals for the state by competing in the senior 96 kg bodyweight category. He lifted a total of 336 kgs with 147 kgs in snatch and 189 kgs in clean & jerk. Shankar Lapung and Golom Tinku also bagged Silver and Bronze medals for the state by competing in the 61 kg bodyweight category. Lapung lifted a total of 243 kgs with 111 kgs in snatch and 132 kgs in clean & jerk, while Tinku lifted a total of 234 kgs with snatch 102 kgs + clean & jerk 132 kgs. Adding another Bronze medal for the state, Bengia Tani participated in the youth 67 kg category.
