Natural Lakes of Arunachal Pradesh
Arunachal Pradesh is filled with wonderful quirks, from unique customs and cordial community to uncovered flora/fauna and scenic views amongst other magnificent aspects. This blog will venture into one of the forms of water - Lakes, which occur in Arunachal Pradesh. Since the state is in the Himalayan range, it is loaded with several natural lakes in each different region. The natural lakes in Arunachal are formed in mountainous areas and are primarily fed by glaciers and rain, hence it is freshwater (mostly). Let's tag out a few of the popular and natural lakes of Arunachal Pradesh.
Ganga Lake or GekerSinyik-
is a lake located in Itanagar (the capital of the state). It is one of the most popular places to visit in the Capital for pleasure and the picturesque view of the lake. The lake water is generated from underground and because the lake stays still with no connection with moving water bodies, its colour is green yet many local mythological rumours and legends are still spread about Ganga Lake and its lake colour.
Madhuri Lake or Sangestar Tso Lake-
Is located on the way from Tawang town to Bum La Pass in Tawang district: approximately 7 kilometres before the intersection of the road heading to Bum La Pass, or 20 km from Tawang town near the Indo-China border above 16,500 ft above sea level.SangestarTsa Lake, also known as Tso in Tibetan, is sometimes referred to as Madhuri Lake because Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit appeared in the film 'Koyla' where an iconic scene was shot in the lake. The entire Lake region was designated grassland before the 1950 incident and the then locals of the region used the meadow to graze their animals. The existence of dead trees poking out of the lake's centre attests to this fact.
Glow Lake-
This natural lake is situated in wakro, Lohit district and takes about 3 to 6 hours by foot to arrive. The lake covers an area of about 8 sq km and is located at an elevation of about 5000 feet above sea level and has a circumference of about 5 km. It is not as popular as Ganga Lake or Madhuri Lake but it is a fairly sought-after spot amongst the locals. It has the ideal amount of lush vegetation, snow-capped mountains, and visual splendour to make the hike to the lake a lot more fun and adventurous.
Mehao Lake-
is a natural lake situated at an elevation of around 3,000 feet in the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary, about 14 km from Roing township and covering an area of about 4 sq. km. The lake was formed naturally after the earthquake occurred in the region on 15 August 1950. Various geologists have declared it as a Low Nutrient Lake, meaning an Oligotrophic Lake which further means: a relatively young and quite clear lake that has little to no aquatic vegetation. The lake attracts not only tourists but numerous wild ducks and also offers boating facilities.
Lake of No Return-
is located on the Indo-Burma border in the Pangsau Pass of Changlang District. Several rumours and myths are floating about how the lake got its name. The most frequently repeated narrative came from different American sources: reports claiming that during World War II, several allied planes flying in the area crashed into the lake and were never recovered. Another rumour tells a story of a party of Japanese soldiers who got lost and ended up at this lake. Each of them contracted malaria and died as a result. According to a different tale, some British soldiers were trapped in quicksand. Another recount how some US marshals dispatched on a mission to investigate the area got entangled in the undergrowth and were unable to escape. We will never know the real story.
Pangateng Tso Lake (PT Tso Lake)-
is situated at an elevation of 13,000 feet above sea level in Tawang District and about a distance of 18 kilometres from Tawang Township. This beautiful crystal-clear lake remains entirely frozen in the winter season and is one of the approx. 108 lakes in the Tawang region. It was the Pankang tree, whose log the Tibetan government collected until the year 1914, is whence the name PankangTeng derived.Lakes in Dibang Valley-
