Mandala– A New Tourist Destination in Arunachal Pradesh
The mystic land of Shangri-La behind the Himalayas from novelist James Hilton's fictional account in his 1933 novel “Lost Horizon” have led to many expeditions to find the elusive paradise. However, all have been in vain.
While on Shangri-La, Arunachal Pradesh is one destination with peace and harmony where humanity lives in accordance with ancient preaching. Surrounded by crystal mountains, lakes and monasteries, here the wisdom of humanity is conserved, ready to share enlightenment just like at Shangri-La.
One of such tranquil destinations is Mandala, hemmed in by beautiful mountain hills and deodar forests. The place houses Mandala Top or the 108 Mani, which was built in 2018 as a religious / spiritual destination, adorned with 108 stupas placed in a circular design. The Buddhist mantra, “Om Mani Padme Hum” the six-syllable mantra that is the essence of all Dharma, is inscribed in each pillar.
Situated in the West Kameng district of Arunachal the Mandala sits 10,000 ft above sea level. At this elevation level, the altitude could get to you, but the snow-capped mountain view from up here is sure to awaken the thrill seeker in you! The place exudes calmness and will refresh your tired soul.
The destination, although accounting for a relatively smaller area, remains one of the less explored hilly passes in east Himalayas. Traditionally, stupas are dome-shaped Buddhist shrines, inscribed with religious or spiritual relics, however, here at Mandala the 108 Buddhist stupas have been constructed in square slabs. The local community out here came forward to donate one stupa per family, adding on to its religious significance. It is believed in Buddhist custom, that walking in clockwise direction around the stupas purifies all negative energy and fosters the path to enlightenment. This is a great activity to indulge in, enabling you to surrender yourself to your inner wisdom.
Due to its diverse ark, Mandala is also known as the paradise of birdwatcher. If you are one, then this place is an absolute hotspot just for you. The lush green and thick forest surrounding provides a suitable ambience for various species of rare and migratory birds to flock here.
However, 108 Manes and bird-watching are not the only things to experience here. Being a high-altitude location in the Himalayas, tourists visiting Mandala during the winter season stands an ethereal chance to witness snowfall, which completely transforms your experience into a magical one.
If you are planning to visit Mandala, the best time would be in the month of November, when you can witness the Mandala Festival of Prayer. A festival, where local folks display their cultural heritage by music, dances, crafts, fashion shows and cuisines. It is a spiritually inclined festival in which the local community partake in a grand celebration. As a tourist, the festival offers a refreshing peak into the local traditions and customs. Also, it is always a delight to be greeted the warm hospitality of the locals there.
