Spirits - the word itself is enough to scare some individuals. We all have some co-workers, family members, or friends for whom watching a horror movie is a sheer matter of plight.

Almost all of us have seen horror movies in which a girl hears strange noises coming from her home. As she searches for the source of the sound, she finds some really eerie figures standing behind her.

Scary, isn’t it?

Assam is known for its mysteries which still dwell in the modern century. Most of us in Assam, once in our lifetime, have probably heard of ghost stories mentioning ghosts like Baak, Pikhas, and many more. When we were little, we would listen to our grandmother recount the ghost sightings and sounds they had experienced while out for a walk in the evening or at night.

Today, we have curated a list of haunted places in Assam which might give you a chill later in the night. Get ready to chill out, turn off the lights (for a better reading experience) and explore the spookiest places in Assam.

Haunted Lounge, Jorhat

Located near the Gymkhana club in Jorhat, is a haunted house that was a lodge of the freemasons during British rule. Visitors have seen demonic symbols inside the house and have heard weird noises and screams of women. Though it's still a mystery today, many believe that the spirits of common men who were punished by the Britishers rest in the house. Nearby residents have also reportedly heard strange noises that come from the home in the late evening or in the middle of the night. Some people have found evil objects that can surely scare anyone to death.

Haunted House, Nagaon

A haunted House is something common when mentioning horror sightings and this house is also believed to be haunted and can give anyone the creeps. Near the Tarun Ram Phukan Rd, in Nagaon, is a house where you can hear the screams of a girl. Many passers-by have heard weird noises from a girl. No matter how many times you pass, you will hear the same voice every time. Now that’s a little scary. It is believed that a young girl was horribly raped and killed there. It is believed that she now wanders there to punish her abusers.

Hahim Picnic Spot

It's January, and you and your friends are planning to go out for a picnic but are stuck on deciding the location for the outing Suddenly, you come across Hahim Picnic spot while searching. The location is good and mesmerizing but gradually after dusk, one can hear unusual noises that are not of this world. Yes, that’s true. Many people have experienced paranormal activities in the vicinity of Hahim Picnic spot. The highway stretch that passes through this area is said to be haunted. Unnatural sounds have been heard from this area by some people. It is said that a wicked witch lives nearby and haunts people (perhaps because she dislikes socializing with friends).

 Bogijuli Camp

What do you think of when I say forests? Animals, beautiful scenarios, or an eerie figure behind you? Well, that may not be the case for all forests, but located at the Nameri Forest (Sonitpur District), is a camping site, Bogijuli Camp, which offers beautiful chirps of birds along with unnatural sounds to scare people. Visitors have reported hearing bizarre noises in this region, including a woman crying, however upon inspection, nobody has been found. Many people have complained of women laughing and crying in the middle of the night. Some also reported bamboo falling from a nearby bamboo groove in the dead of night but no one is seen when investigated.

Sundarbari Cemetery, Guwahati

A cemetery is a place where reality dwells. The ultimate destination of all humans whether rich or poor, tall or short, white or black. Some people believe that the ghosts of those who weren't able to enter the freedom state—or whatever people call it—wander around the cemetery and its surroundings. Sundarbari Cemetery, located at Jalukbari, Guwahati is said to be one of the places where people experience paranormal activities. Many visitors have heard creepy and unnatural sounds near this region. Locals have reported seeing ghostly figures near this location.

Banyan Tree, Puranigudam

A tree is a great place to hang out...if you're a ghost. There is no doubt that trees provide a great source of oxygen, but some trees, such as the old banyan tree in Puranigudam (Nagaon District), provide oxygen as well as some paranormal activity. It is claimed to be haunted and is situated in the Kakharigaon area. According to folklore, the Burmese carried out countless brutalities on the impoverished Assamese villagers during the Assamese-Burmese Wars of the 1820s, including constructing bamboo shacks atop trees, which are more similar to modern-day tree houses, before tying up the villagers and placing them atop the tree and setting fire to the base. Due to the countless terrible accidents that have occurred there throughout the years, it is now believed that the tree is haunted by the spirits of the dead.

Valley of Death, Jatinga

Many birds like to fly, but some birds really like to fly long distances in certain seasons, and we call these birds migratory birds. In this valley of death which is located at Jatinga (near Halflong), the migratory birds do mass suicide and the strange part is no one knows the reason. Isn't it weird to travel so far just to commit suicide? The suicide takes place on a specific strip of land between 6 pm to 9 pm on a moonless night during September and October. This phenomenon has been reported to continue year after year.

Although these sites don’t provide any full proof of the happenings and cannot be explained by any scientific means, however, we cannot deny the fact that there is a world beyond the human eyes. A world that cannot be felt by normal hands, where things cannot be seen by normal eyes. Although some people believe in them and others do not, one thing is certain - some of the greater things are unseen.
