Sansad Khel Spardha-2023: Arunachal Pradesh's Largest Sporting Event Promoting Sports Culture
Arunachal witnessed one of the biggest-ever sporting events in its history. The Sansad Khel Spardha-2023, inspired by the #KheloIndia concept of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was held in the state in the month of April 2023 with the theme, "Sports for Peace and Development," which aimed to create a sports culture across the country.
The Sansad Khel Spardha was conducted in two levels; the Zonal Level and the State Level. The Zonal Level was held at different regions of the state from where the athletes were selected to participate at the State Level. The main objective of the event was to identify and develop talented young athletes who can represent the country at the global level.
The TCL Zone of Zonal Level of the 1st Sansad Khel Spardha 2023 was conducted at Deomali by Tirap District Olympic Association from 8th April, where young athletes under 16 years of age actively participated. The Tirap District emerged as the top-performing district with a total of 20 medals, including 6 gold medals.
The Zonal Level of the event for Central Zone A was held at Ziro, Lower Subansiri which was organized by the Lower Subansiri District Olympic Association under the aegis of the Arunachal Olympic Association. The participating Districts in this level were 1. Papum Pare, 2. Lower Subansiri, 3. Kamle, 4. Upper Subansiri, 5. Kurung Kumey, and 6. Kra Daadi.
The zonal level Sansad Khel Spardha for Central Zone B was held in Leparada district where every young athlete demonstrated outstanding performances. In this Zone, the Shi-Yomi district emerged as the champion with a total of 14 medals, including 6 gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze medals.
After the successful completion of the zonal levels, the Sansad Khel Spardha organized its state-level competition at the Rajiv Gandhi University at Doimukh, Papum Pare. The State Level event started on 15th April 2023 and was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Union Law Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju. The event saw the participation of over 3,500 athletes from across the state who competed in nine events, including arm wrestling, track and field, boxing, karate, taekwondo, table tennis, tug-of-war, weightlifting, and wushu.
The competition concluded on the 17th of April with the Papum Pare district winning the championship title. With an impressive performance, Papum Pare secured 16 gold, 14 silver, and 21 bronze medals, making them the overall champions. Following closely behind were East Kameng with 9 gold, 8 silver, and 12 bronze medals, and West Siang with 7 gold, 3 silver, and 7 bronze medals, securing second and third positions, respectively.
Individual event state-level winners received prize money of Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000, and Rs 10,000 for gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively. Team event winners were awarded Rs 60,000, Rs 40,000, and Rs 20,000 for gold, silver, and bronze medals. Meanwhile, zone-level winners received Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000, and Rs 3,000 for gold, silver, and bronze medals. The closing ceremony was attended by Rajya Sabha member Shri Nabam Rebia and Hon’ble Sports Minister Mama Natung. The Arunachal Olympic Association organized the event under the patronage of Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and in collaboration with the state government, led by Hon’ble Education Minister Taba Tedir, who also serves as the president of the Arunachal Olympic Association.
This Sansad Khel Spardha-2023 was a testament to the government's commitment to promoting sports and creating a sports culture across the country. The event offered an excellent opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talent and skills and contribute to the state's development. It also served as an excellent platform for the state to showcase its tourism potential and attract visitors from different parts of the country.
