Shakespeare once said, "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." This sentiment resonates deeply when we reflect on the life and career of the late Indra Bania, a phenomenal and eminent actor from Assam. Indra Bania’s remarkable journey in the film industry and his lasting impact on people's hearts are testaments to his exceptional talent and dedication.

Late Indra Bania was an actor who could seamlessly slip into any role, whether in theatre, films or as a stand-up comedian. His versatility and skill made him a beloved figure in the Assamese film industry, where his contributions began in the 1960s. He shared the stage with luminaries such as Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Jayanta Hazarika, enthralling audiences across Assam with his performances, particularly in comedy roles, which were always a delight to watch.

His foray into radio further cemented his popularity. Indra Bania’s work in the "Goberdhan Charit" program on All India Radio, Guwahati, where he performed as 'Gober,' made him a household name. His portrayal was so compelling that 'Gober' became synonymous with him. He also graced stages in Kolkata and Delhi, performing in many one-act plays that showcased his wide range of acting abilities.

The turning point in Late Indra Bania's career came with his selection to play the character of Raxeswar Bora in the film Halodhiya Soraye Bau Dhan Khai, directed by Jahnu Barua. His performance was so outstanding that it earned him the prestigious Silver Leopard Award for Best Actor at the Locarno International Film Festival. This honour made him the first Assamese actor and the fifth Indian to receive this honor. This accolade brought international recognition to his talent and to Assamese cinema.

Indra Bania’s love for acting was evident from his childhood. Born in Lakhimpur’s Dhalpur village, he was raised by his uncle and travelled extensively, which enriched his perspective and experiences. He drew inspiration from various sources, including Sarda Bordoloi and the artistic styles of Satyajit Ray and Sambhu Mitra. His performances in "Halodhiya Soraye Bau Dhan Khai" and "Freedom of Edge" elevated his status as an actor, showcasing his ability to imbue characters with profound depth and realism.

His respect for art and culture was boundless. The Late Indra Bania believed in learning continuously and embraced every opportunity to enhance his craft. His dedication was particularly evident during the shooting of "Halodhiya Soraye Bau Dhan Khai," where he immersed himself fully into his character, Raxeswar Barua. To bring authenticity to his role, he adopted the lifestyle of a villager, refraining from cutting his hair and nails and even practising ploughing. This commitment to realism underscored his passion and integrity as an actor.

Despite his immense talent, Indra Bania’s contributions to the Assamese film industry often went underappreciated in the present day. However, his legacy endures through the lasting impressions he left on audiences and the inspiration he provided to future generations of actors.

Indra Bania’s dual personality traits—his inspirational presence in cinema, theatre, and directing, and his unwavering love for theatre—defined his career. He was a source of inspiration not only to his peers but also to the younger generations, constantly encouraging them with his profound talent and dedication. He lived a life deeply intertwined with culture, continually engaging with books and learning new things. His aspiration was always to elevate the cultural landscape to greater heights.

Reflecting on modern society, Indra Bania once remarked, "The standard of living has gone up manifold. What disturbs me is the unhealthy growth of materialism which has robbed the city of its innocence. The growing western influence among the young is eating into our tradition and culture. This is a mad craze for worldly things among the youths, which is not a healthy sign for our society." His words underscore his concern for the erosion of cultural values and his desire for the youth to remain dedicated and rooted in their traditions.

He desired today's youth to be dedicated to their work. Despite his illness, when he was set to travel to Mumbai, he went to Rabindra Bhawan to watch a theatrical play, and on his way back, he walked from there to his house in Kahilipara. This incident highlights his unwavering dedication to the arts and his cultural commitments.
