The essence of this day resides in the profound tribute paid to the memory of a truly remarkable soul, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Every year, on July 1, we reverently commemorate National Doctor's Day, coinciding with the day of his birth and the day he departed from this world. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, born in 1882 in Patna, Bengal Presidency, British India, remains eternally cherished. His unwavering dedication to the field of medicine is immortalized through this commemorative occasion.

Dr. Roy's passion for healing propelled him to pursue his studies at the esteemed St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. Overcoming the initial barriers of prejudice prevailing at the time, he persevered with unyielding determination, ultimately attaining excellence in his chosen path. Through his unwavering commitment, he achieved the prestigious distinction of becoming a Member of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Roy's dedication to his profession and the nation remained unshaken. Despite the turmoil of the Indian Independence movement, he chose to focus on his medical calling, believing that mastering his profession would be the most significant contribution he could make. As one of Mahatma Gandhi's personal physicians and a trusted advisor to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Roy's influence reached great heights.

In 1961, India bestowed upon Dr. Roy the highest honor, the Bharat Ratna, recognizing his exceptional service to the nation. His legacy lives on through the Aghorkamini Devi Nursing Home, a place of healing and care, named after his devoted mother. His life’s journey truly serves as an inspiring beacon for generations to come.
