Cracking APSC – Not the curious case of Benjamin Button (PART II)
APSC (Assam Public Service Examination) is a constitutional state commission that conducts competitive examinations for entry into the different grades of services in the state government.
The commission is presided over by the Governor, who is supported by a Chief Executive Officer and other senior officers. At present many examinations are being conducted on behalf of APSC every year at various centers across Assam. The exams are divided into two cycles: one for entry to different grades of Junior Civil Services (ACS), Revenue Service (ALRS), Police Service (APS) etc., and another cycle for entry into Central Services consisting of Administrative Grade I & II, Secretariat Grade I & II, Technical Grade I & II etc.
The APSC has maintained a history of providing excellent opportunities for candidates throughout the years. For the upcoming cycle, recruitment for around 800 vacancies will be conducted by the APSC.
The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) Examination is one of the most challenging exams in Assam, but that doesn't stop thousands from applying. The exam attracts young minds because it's a prestigious career opportunity with power and prestige, along with an opportunity to serve the society’s best interests. It can be an inspiring career target even for those candidates who seldom get cheered on by their peers and mentors. Although challenging, the exam also reveals that many have succeeded before and several more will succeed in the future. So, there’s always hope!
Some people are falsely convinced that they don’t have what it takes to clear the APSC Combined Competitive Examination. But the reality is that anyone with a clear focus and a proper strategic study plan can attempt and crack the exam.
Let's find out how you can start preparing:
Invest Time On Preparation:
Studying for the APSC CC Examination is a difficult and time-consuming process, but it can be made achievable by starting early. Let’s say you have 12 months to prepare before the scheduled exam, it still gives you plenty of time to study everything in detail without feeling rushed or worried about deadlines. The benefit of starting early with your preparation is that it offers you ample time to build up your knowledge on what you’ve already learnt (thereby strengthening your concepts) and bring down the risk of attempting to understand all concepts at the last minute.
Prepare according to the Exam Pattern:
The APSC CCE is a very competitive exam and it requires several stages of preparation. The first stage comprises the Preliminary Examination, the second stage comprises the Main Examination, and finally it's time for the Interview or "VIVA'' stage. Needless to say, every step is designed differently - therefore preparation for these different stages should also comprise different studying techniques, with its own space and detailed information on each individual phase.
Choose your Optional Subject wisely:
In preparation for your exam, you need to choose your optional subject wisely. Choose a topic that is interesting and enjoyable for you, so it doesn't feel like a burden while studying. Also, while choosing a subject, it is important to determine the scope of syllabus that you need to take on. Certain subjects require you to be thoroughly updated with the latest development or inclusion in the field, while some subjects have a defined or limited scope. Make sure that the scope of syllabus of the chosen subject isn’t out of your area of expertise.
Preparation for Prelims:
Prelims can be a tough time for anybody. But if you want to ace them, start early and don't give up! It may seem simple but being thorough with NCERT books can be extremely useful towards unlocking your prelims. Daily catching up with your NCERT books before taking your General Studies prelims will help you understand the topics better. To get an edge over other candidates, practicing English vocabulary can be very helpful as well - so read the newspaper regularly or play word puzzles like crosswords! Lastly, remember that revision is key; revise all of your notes just in case something important got missed during lectures.
APSC Combined Competitive Examinations are tough to pass. But with the right strategy, you can do it! The following are few tactics that will help you in your exam preparation:
- Reviewing all past APSC exams & UPSC exams (since APSC new pattern is based on UPSC) and answering practice questions on them for getting acquianted with their difficulty levels.
- Studying each section separately so as not to confuse yourself if one question comes up from another subject area.
- Keeping track of what subjects were hard or easy for you throughout your review process; this way when faced with those particular topics again during examination day, they should be easier since your mind isn’t occupied with too many things.
- Time management is an important prep strategy because it allows candidates to alleviate stress during the APSC exam. They provide more convenience, increase efficiency and allow students to progress with increased accuracy, which is helpful in ensuring success on exam day.
- To summarize, online mock test series provide flexibility, convenience and allow students to study anytime, making it easier for them to study more efficiently.
Last but not the least, as the age old saying goes - consistency is Key to success and there’s no shortcut to it. So make sure, whatever approach you’ve taken for your APSC or other competitive examination, you’re consistent in your efforts and focused in your preparation. It pays off in the end.
