Our Northeast has many heroes who have sacrificed themselves to protect our motherland. Some are well known to people outside the Northeast, but some remain relatively unknown despite their supreme sacrifice. Havaldar Hangpan Dada was one of those true soldiers who were martyred while protecting India. Dada who was in the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army has been honoured by India’s highest peacetime military decoration, the Ashoka Chakra Award.

Havaldar Hangpan Dada was born on October 2nd, 1979 in Borduria village of Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh. During his childhood, he was very brave and had saved his childhood friend, Somhang Lamra, from drowning in their nearby river. According to his friends and family, he was very interested in sports and other outdoor games and was also able to do 30–35 pushups every day not a normal thing for a child of his age. At the age of 18, on October 28th, 1997, he was recruited into the 3rd battalion of the Parachute Regiment. After serving there for 8 years, he was transferred to the Assam Regiment centre in 2005 and later joined the 4th Battalion of Assam Rifle on January 24th, 2008. He then requested his officials to transfer him to the Rashtriya Battalion on operation in Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir. Approving his request, he was posted to 35 Rashtriya Rifles in May 2016, where he took his last breath with his unit, serving the nation.

During his posting to 35 Rashtriya Rifles in May 2016, his unit which was deployed in the Naugam sector in Jammu and Kashmir received information from intelligence about a potential hideout of terrorists in that sector. On the intervening night of May 25th, Hangpan Dada, along with his comrades, led a charge to the hiding spot of terrorists. After reaching there, he spotted four terrorists and tried to block their escape route. Without caring for his own life, he engaged with them and killed two of them in close combat, but was critically injured. On seeing his brave action, the remaining two terrorists got frightened and tried to flee, hiding behind the boulders and trees. But Dada did not stop there and went after them, coming face-to-face with the third terrorist. In a hand-to-hand fight, he killed the third one. Not for a moment did he care about his injury and continued pursuing the fourth terrorist. But unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the process on 26th May 2016. Havaldar Hangpan Dada was given the nation’s highest gallantry award during peace-time operations, “Ashok Chakra”, on the eve of the Independence Day in 2016 which was received by his wife Chasen Lowang Dada.

The Assam Regimental Centre named its main office block in its headquarters after Hangpan Dada to remember his services to the country. Not only this, to honour his name, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh renamed the annual football and volleyball (men and women) tournaments for the Chief Minister’s Trophy as the Hangpan Dada Memorial Trophy.

He may have gone from this world, but his name will always be etched in everyone’s heart.
