Future with AI: Opportunities or Fears Unlocked?
For decades, tech experts have been working relentlessly hard to push the limits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and see how AI could revolutionise the world. In the past decades, several AI mechanisms have been deployed in industries such as healthcare, defence, supply chain, and so on to enhance outcomes and simplify solutions.
Taking tech innovations to a whole new level, the release of ChatGPT by Open AI unlocked a new milestone rather quickly, giving an intriguing peek into the endless possibilities at what could be achieved with the use of AI mechanisms that can almost process like a human mind; only a lot faster!
Within days of ChatGPT’s release, users were able to hold interesting as well as alarming conversations with the superior AI bot. This was nothing like a conversation with Apple's Siri or Amazon’s Alexa. The media soon flooded with news about the wonder bot, where hundreds of tech experts chimed in to share their experience with ChatGPT. And just like that, a can of (AI) worms got unleashed into the tech world dominating everyone’s attention as well as career.
Initially, in the 1950s progress was slow. With the introduction of machines like mills and desktops, the AI impact had been significantly low but yet progressive. It was to aid ease of life through education, health tracking, and communication. But in the early 2000s, the pace started racing up with the high pace computers handling data and the rise of information technology. But much of reality cannot be reduced to zeroes and ones. There will always be a need for human input as it was engineered by mankind.
AI has been evolving alongside bio life since industrialization. But only recently is the AI revolution being talked about after the public release of chatGPT. However, chatGPT represents merely a fraction of the entire AI revolution. There's more running unexplored. Amidst these advancements in AI, what lies ahead of us? What is the future that AI is bringing to us?
Keeping aside the limitless possibilities that can be unlocked with the use of AI, it is worth noting that humans have also been apprehensive towards overly relying on tech. No matter how much we depend on tech to make our lives simpler, it will also continue to be a threat to the human world, if not handled correctly.
One of the most pressing concerns over AI has been the fear of going out of jobs.
It cannot be neglected that the implications of AI will be very vast and diverse among different aspects of society. Yes, AI could lead to significant job displacement, however, it will also create new job opportunities. Just like industrialization brought in new unforeseen job opportunities.
A significant yet uninformed perspective of AI is that it needs the ability to sustain itself independently. It processes data that is being entered into the system. Their dependency on codes is perpetual. This brings us to a question. What if they start generating codes of their own? Well, there are code-generating AI tools. And this is what the actual fear might be. Auto-GPT developed by Torantulino is one such open-source project which has the ability to work by itself without any human intervention. The line of the future alongside this would be the auto-generating machines and tools. The gap in communication will be highly reduced. Artificial physical presence will boost education and diplomatic talks.
We will no longer be limiting tourism to earthly destinations! With Elon Musk’s SpaceX, space exploration will achieve significant milestones. Not only this, but his other ventures like Neuralink and The boring company promises major support in resolving traffic congestion and creating a brain interface to allow control over tech products through thoughts.
The further development of AI will pave unforeseen and thrilling new life advancements which mankind awaits. Although, one might also pause to wonder, if this could also go the other way round? As AI gets more powerful and more human-like, could it also possess the ability to turn its back on us? As the future is limitless, the path to greater advancement could also very well turn into that of destruction. It all depends how leadership across the world leverages the gift of AI. Till then, there’s no harm in wnjoying the best of what we have accomplished so far.
