Did Assam Pollution Control Board Refute IQAir's Report under pressure?
It seems there is a discrepancy between the Assam Pollution Control Board's findings and IQAir's report regarding the air quality in Guwahati. The Assam Pollution Control Board has rejected the IQAir report, stating that their monitoring indicates a significantly lower PM2.5 concentration in the air of Guwahati.
According to the Assam Pollution Control
Board, their monitoring data shows a monthly average PM2.5 concentration of
52.61 micrograms per cubic meter in Guwahati. This figure contrasts sharply
with the IQAir report, which claimed the concentration to be 105.4 micrograms
per cubic meter.
The report, compiled by IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality technology organization, purportedly ranked Guwahati as Central and South Asia's second most polluted city based on the average PM2.5 concentration in 2023.
However, allegations have emerged suggesting that the Assam Pollution Control Board may have faced external pressure to refute a recent report by IQAir, which ranked Guwahati as the second most polluted city. The board's swift dismissal of the report has raised eyebrows, sparking speculation about potential influences behind this decision.
This disagreement highlights the
importance of accurate and reliable data in assessing environmental conditions
and formulating appropriate policies to address pollution issues. It may also
prompt further scrutiny and discussion to reconcile the disparities between the
different sources of information on air quality in Guwahati.
