Assam's Education Initiative: Building Schools While Others Shut Down - A Contradiction in Priorities
The Assam state government has embarked on an ambitious project to construct 100 schools across 20 districts, signaling a monumental step towards fostering educational excellence. With a substantial investment of Rs 300 crore, these schools aim to provide students with unparalleled opportunities to thrive and excel in their chosen fields.
These newly proposed schools are set to
redefine the educational landscape, boasting modern amenities that prioritize
both comfort and advancement. Equipped with spacious classrooms,
state-of-the-art technology, and advanced science laboratories, students will
have access to the tools necessary for holistic learning experiences.
Moreover, the emphasis on creating
conducive learning environments is evident through the inclusion of extensive
libraries, common areas, and access to safe drinking water. Recognizing the
importance of gender equality, separate restroom facilities for girls and boys
will be a fundamental aspect of each school's infrastructure.
Beyond functionality, the comprehensive
plan also extends to aesthetics, with thoughtful furnishings and landscaped
courtyards aimed at creating inviting and inspiring educational spaces.
The construction of these schools
signifies a significant investment in the future of Assam's youth, providing
them with the resources and support needed to pursue their academic and career
aspirations.
However, amid this promising development,
it's crucial to scrutinize the districts selected for this investment. The
alarming rise in the average annual dropout rate in LP schools, soaring to
8.49% in 2022-23 from 6.02% in 2021-22, raises concerns about the efficacy of
retention strategies. Additionally, amidst the closure or merging of several schools
due to low student enrolment is there a need for more schools? or at least
warrants a closer examination of the government's education policies.
In 2022, the Assam Government closed 34 schools across 16 districts as none of their students passed the Class X state board examination held in March. It's perplexing to witness the government's decision to construct more schools rather than focusing on enhancing the education system by recruiting better teachers and modernizing the existing infrastructure.
As stewards of public funds, the government must ensure transparency and sincerity in its utilization,
prioritizing meaningful impact over mere numerical achievements, especially in
the lead-up to elections.
