Google's search engine created a unique doodle in honour of renowned Indian physicist and meteorologist Anna Mani on the occasion of her 104th birthday. On its home page, Google honoured Anna Mani with a vibrant and whimsical illustration of the author.
Born in Kerala (known as Travancore then) on August 23, 1918, Anna Mani is known as the "Weather Woman of India." Anna was constantly motivated by the activities of Mahatma Gandhi and the nationalist struggle. She was so inspired that she subsequently wore only khadi clothing. Anna’s life story was inspiring even before she fully entered her higher education. Her life's work as a physicist and meteorologist enabled Indian government institutions to correctly forecast the weather in the present day. Additionally, she conducted research on the optical qualities of diamond and ruby under the direction of physicist Professor C V Raman.
She wrote five research papers after earning her B.Sc. with honours in physics and chemistry from P Pachaiyappas College in Chennai in 1939. In 1945, she went to Imperial College, London to pursue graduate studies in Physics. Later, Anna Mani was appointed as the second-in-command of the India Meteorological Department and held a number of significant roles within the World Meteorological Organization of the United Nations. She was awarded the INSA K. R. Ramanathan Medal in 1987 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to science.
She was chosen to serve as a Trustee of the Bangalore-based Raman Research Institute following her retirement. Later on, she went on to establish an organization that created solar and wind energy equipment.
