What ChatGPT had to say about layoffs, skills and job security?

Let’s start with a short introduction to the latest buzz in the world of AI - ChatGPT. In its own words, ChatGPT refers to itself as -

An artificial intelligence assistant trained by OpenAI to assist users with a wide range of tasks and provide information on a variety of topics. My primary function is to provide helpful and accurate responses to user questions and requests. I do not have physical form and exist purely as a computer program. I am not a human being and do not have personal feelings or experiences. I was designed to help users by providing information and assistance to the best of my ability.

Most of us have heard about ChatGPT in the past few weeks, while many may not have heard of it yet. As someone who has been following the news on ChatGPT for quite some time, I was fascinated to learn that it could interact like a human and give its own opinions on several matters. However, in just about a week of its release, the responses generated by ChatGPT shook the internet for being ‘dangerous’ and seemed like a scary beginning to ‘rise of the machines against humans’. If you wish to learn more on its initial responses, then a quick search on the internet will reveal many articles disclosing their ‘chat history’ with ChatGPT revealing some worrying statements.

Needless to say, OpenAI took prompt action and limited much of its ‘human-like’ interactions, including censoring certain keywords that could potentially trigger negative or dark responses. Despite the restrictions introduced, I managed to get some pretty acceptable responses regarding a few questions I had.

 Here’s what my conversation with ChatGPT looked like -

Curious User: Why are companies resorting to mass layoffs?

Will I be using ChatGPT to rely on facts and solutions?

The answer is likely no. Admittedly, had my questions fetched some opinionated responses from the AI tool, I would have been tempted to explore deeper just to pick its brain - like having a conversation with a really interesting stranger who knows stuff and has a say on pretty much everything.

Unfortunately, the answers I got were generic and diplomatic; not wrong necessarily. It will be perhaps useful for people who are using it to rewrite articles, gain textbook answers, and so on. My experience with ChatGPT can be summed up in one line as - a talking encyclopaedia about ‘anything under the sun’. I see the use of such AI tools as a secondary point of reference, at best. However, from a research and data analysis perspective, AI tools like ChatGPT can prove really useful to collate data from all over the internet and generate its own version of analysis. Meanwhile, it’s fun to chat with the AI and get some interesting answers to whatever questions you may have.
