Aswaklanta Temple: The Legend of Krishna’s Tired Horse
On the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra in Guwahati
stands Aswaklanta Temple, a place of religious significance whose name is
linked to an intriguing legend from Hindu mythology. The story takes us back to
the time when Lord Krishna set out to defeat Narakasura, the demon king whose
reign had become a source of trouble in the mythological accounts.
According to local legend, Lord Krishna was travelling on his horse in pursuit of Narakasura. The journey was long, and as he reached the place where the temple stands today, his horse grew exhausted. The animal needed rest before continuing the journey. This moment, remembered in local tradition, is believed to have given the place its name: Aswaklanta.
The name itself carries the essence of the story. Aswa means horse, while Klanta means tired or weary. Together, the words are associated with the image of a tired horse resting after a demanding journey.
Over time, this legend became closely connected with the identity of the temple and the surrounding area. Although the story belongs to religious tradition rather than established historical documentation, it continues to offer an engaging explanation for the place’s unusual name.
Today, Aswaklanta Temple stands as a reminder of the many ways mythology shapes the cultural landscape of Assam. Set against the broad waters of the Brahmaputra, the temple draws devotees and visitors interested in its spiritual significance, architectural character and legendary past.
The story of Krishna’s tired horse adds a memorable dimension to a visit. It invites visitors to look beyond the temple’s physical presence and discover the folklore that has helped preserve its identity across generations.
