Assam Book Fair: A Literary Legacy of Assam
The Assam Book Fair,
organized by the Assam Publication Board,
holds a special place in the cultural and literary history of Assam. It not
only showcases the rich literary heritage of the region but also promotes
reading culture among all age groups. Here's a deeper dive into its history,
the people involved, and its significance:
Foundation and Early Days
The Assam Publication Board initiated the
Assam Book Fair in 1984 with the aim
of fostering a love for books and literature in Assam. It began modestly but
quickly grew into one of the most anticipated literary events in the state. The
fair was envisioned to provide a platform for Assamese writers, publishers, and readers to interact and exchange
ideas, thereby strengthening the state’s literary community.
Key Personalities
The board
has consistently organized and managed the event. Its members, including directors, chairpersons, and cultural
leaders, have worked tirelessly to uphold the fair’s quality and relevance.
Notable figures such as BirendraNathDatta
(noted folklorist and writer) and HomenBorgohain
(prominent Assamese author and journalist) were instrumental in promoting the
event during its formative years. Renowned Assamese literary figures like Indira Goswami (MamoniRaisomGoswami), NirmalPrabhaBordoloi, and Lakshmi Nandan Bora have been part of
the book fair, enriching its sessions with their works and insights. Local
publishers like Bani Prakash and Assam Book Depot have been regular
participants, ensuring the fair represents a diverse range of Assamese
literature. National publishers such as Oxford
University Press, Penguin Random
House, and HarperCollins often
join, bridging regional and national literary landscapes.
Milestones and Growth
1980s and 1990s:
Initially
focused on Assamese literature, the fair began attracting publishers from other
states and international publishers over time. It became a meeting point for
authors, scholars, and readers, hosting literary discussions, poetry recitals,
and book launches.
2000s Onwards:
The fair
expanded its scope, with special sections for children's literature, translations,
and rare manuscripts. Collaborative
programs with countries like Bangladesh
and organizations like SahityaAkademi
brought international attention.
Events and Activities
Literary Sessions featuring celebrated authors, translators, and
critics remain the fair’s highlight. Discussions often focus on contemporary
issues, literature’s role in society, and the preservation of regional
languages. Folk music, dance performances, and plays are organized alongside
the fair to celebrate Assam’s cultural richness. Dedicated spaces for
children’s literature encourage young readers with storytelling, art
competitions, and interactive sessions with authors.
Challenges Faced
The fair
was canceled in 2020, but it returned in 2021 with COVID protocols,
demonstrating resilience. The emergence of other fairs like the Northeast Book Fair led to a healthy
rivalry, pushing organizers to innovate and enhance visitor experience.
Significance
The fair
serves as a crucial platform for showcasing Assamese writers and their works,
particularly at a time when regional languages often struggle against the
dominance of English. Authors and publishers from across India and neighboring
countries contribute to a diverse literary dialogue. The fair boosts local
publishers and artisans, creating an ecosystem that supports Assamese literary
and cultural industries.
Memorable Editions
The 2007 edition celebrated the works of Bhupen Hazarika, with a dedicated
section on his musical and literary legacy. In 2014, the fair celebrated its 30th
anniversary, featuring an exhibition on the evolution of Assamese publishing.
The 2019 edition focused on
children’s literature, with workshops by acclaimed authors and illustrators.
Venue and Attendance
The Assam Book Fair, a cornerstone of
Assam's literary and cultural landscape, has had a fascinating journey in terms
of its venues. Initially held at the iconic Judges Field, the fair enjoyed a central and historic location in
the heart of Assam. However, following the transformation of Judges Field into
a sports-only venue, the event was relocated to the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) Ground in Chandmari, a site that
became synonymous with the fair for many years.
The AEI
Ground’s convenient location made it a favorite spot for book enthusiasts,
attracting thousands of visitors daily, including students, educators,
bibliophiles, and families.
This
year, however, due to ongoing construction of the flyover, the fair will move to the Veterinary Ground in Khanapara. The new location promises ample
space for exhibitors and visitors, ensuring the fair continues its tradition of
offering an immersive literary experience. This shift underscores the
adaptability of the Assam Book Fair in maintaining its appeal and accessibility
amidst evolving urban infrastructure.
Legacy
The Assam Book Fair remains a symbol of Assam’s
deep-rooted literary tradition. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to
adapt, inspire, and celebrate the power of books across generations.
A visit to the Assam
Book Fair is not just an event; it’s an experience that connects the
past, present, and future of Assam’s literary landscape.
