
Assam Panchayat Polls Phase 2 Sees 72% Turnout Amid Minor Incidents; Re-Polling in Select Booths on May 9
The second phase of the Assam Panchayat Elections 2025 took place today, May 7, across 13 districts, including Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, Darrang, and Bongaigaon.
Voter Turnout
As of the latest reports, approximately 72% voter turnout has been recorded in this phase, with Dhubri district registering the highest at 86%. The final turnout percentage may increase as data from all polling stations are compiled.
Polling Day Overview
Polling commenced at 7:30 AM and will conclude at 3:00 PM. The process was largely peaceful, though minor incidents were reported in Cachar and Karimganj districts, where ballot papers were allegedly snatched. These incidents were promptly addressed by security personnel.
Due to reported irregularities, re-polling has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, in select booths within Cachar, Karimganj, and one booth in Nalbari district.
Candidates and Positions
In this phase, 35,056 candidates contested for 10,909 positions across various levels of the Panchayati Raj system, including Zilla Parishads, Anchalik Panchayats, and Gaon Panchayats.
Upcoming Events
Re-polling: Scheduled for May 9 in the aforementioned districts.
Counting of Votes: Set to begin on May 11, 2025.
